MISC Names First LNG Carrier in QatarEnergy Fleet Expansion
MISC has officially named Th’ailib, the first of three new 174,000-cubic-metre liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, during a ceremony held at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) in South Korea. The vessel is part of a long-term charter agreement with QatarEnergy, set to begin operations in 2026 under a 15-year contract. Two additional vessels are scheduled for delivery as part of MISC's involvement in QatarEnergy's LNG fleet expansion program, bringing the total number of vessels across two phases to 15.
Th’ailib is equipped with advanced technologies, including dual-fuel engines, a reliquefaction system, high-performance anti-fouling hull coating, and an air lubrication system, all aimed at enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing emissions. The vessel also adheres to International Maritime Organization requirements and international maritime standards, featuring state-of-the-art navigation, safety, and monitoring systems.
The name Th’ailib is inspired by Jabal Thuaileb in Qatar's Fox Hills district and the Arabic word for ‘fox’. The naming ceremony on October 6 was attended by representatives from QatarEnergy, MISC, Samsung Heavy Industries, and DNV. Zahid Osman, MISC President and Group CEO, emphasized the critical role of LNG in meeting global energy demands and supporting the transition to lower-emission energy systems.
Osman highlighted MISC's long-standing expertise as an LNG shipowner and expressed confidence in the company's ability to safely and efficiently operate these sophisticated maritime assets. The ceremony underscored the strong partnership between MISC and QatarEnergy, with a focus on delivering reliable and efficient LNG transportation solutions.
