Mississippi River Water Levels Remain a Concern for Grain Exports

Low water levels on the Mississippi River have been a recurring issue since 2022, affecting barge traffic and grain exports. The river's current water levels are lower than in many of the past five years.

Mike Steenhoek, Executive Director of the Soy Transportation Coalition, notes that recent rainfall has temporarily elevated water levels but expresses concern about a potential return to low levels.

The next few months, October to December, are critical for ag traffic on the Mississippi River. Steenhoek emphasizes the importance of sufficient water levels during this period to avoid barge transportation disruptions.
