Mitchell City Council Considers Major Upgrades to Corn Palace and City Hall

The Mitchell City Council has decided to consider major upgrades to the Corn Palace and City Hall in the upcoming city budget. The council held a special meeting on Monday, Aug. 31, to tour city facilities and discuss the preliminary 2027 budget of $73.3 million.

This year's budget was described by City Administrator Stephanie Ellwein as 'the hardest to put together.' It shows no growth in sales tax revenue and matches the consumer price index for property tax growth.

The council will consider equipment and building updates for the Corn Palace, including a $3.4 million HVAC system, design and contingency costs, and $375,000 for gym floor and subfloor replacement.
