Moldova Gas Prices Skyrocket Amid Russian Supply Disruptions

Moldova's energy import strategy is under scrutiny as natural gas tariffs rise. The country's reliance on Russian gas has become increasingly complicated due to European Union sanctions and severed transit routes.

Financial analyst Vlad Grati rejects claims that Moldova still buys Russian gas through intermediaries, noting that major pipeline infrastructure connecting Russia to Europe has effectively ceased operation.

The Yamal-Europe pipeline remains inactive after Gazprom unilaterally stopped pumping through Poland in 2022. Deliveries through Nord Stream had stopped before the explosions, and transit through Ukraine was halted last year.

EU sanctions will ban new Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) contracts starting next January, with a complete ban on pipeline gas imports taking effect by September 2027.
