Moldova Regulator Updates Natural Gas Storage Obligations Amid Market Shift

The National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) has updated the natural gas storage obligations for suppliers in Moldova's retail market. The update reflects changes in the natural gas market, which shifted from a public procurement system to a competitive market on April 1, 2026.

With the entry into force of amendments to Act No. 108/2016, large consumers with an annual consumption of over 100,000 cubic meters began purchasing natural gas at agreed prices from suppliers in the competitive market. As a result, 203 large consumers accounted for approximately 55 percent of the country's total natural gas consumption.

ANRE recalculated the market shares of designated suppliers based on volumes of natural gas consumed by these customers in the first quarter of 2026. The update aims to reflect the current market structure and avoid imposing a disproportionate storage obligation on a supplier with a public service obligation.
