Moldova Temporarily Limits Grain Imports Amid Price Fears
Moldovan lawmakers have introduced temporary licensing for grain and oilseed imports until October 31 to shield domestic growers from price inflation. The legislation, approved by a majority of 53 deputies, rejected a proposal to extend restrictions through late 2027.
The government argued that prolonged barriers would disrupt the milling and livestock sectors, driving up consumer prices. Vice chairman Dorian Istrati said the shortened timeframe prevents supply bottlenecks for domestic processors, citing petitions from the Pork Producers Association and the National Poultry Breeders Association of Moldova.
Lawmaker Sergiu Stefanco criticized the tight deadline and the decision to bar agricultural associations from licensing boards. Istrati countered that including industry lobbies would create a conflict of interest, as they represent companies applying for licenses.
