Moldova's Energy Prices Soar Ahead of Winter

Moldova's energy regulator has approved sharp increases in household natural gas and district heating tariffs. The National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) raised residential gas prices to €1.29 per cubic meter, including VAT, starting from October 1. This represents a significant hike from the current base rate of 18.79 MDL.

The regulator also increased heating rates in Chisinau and Balti by 60% and 50%, respectively. Marin Gospodarenco, an economic analyst, warned that utility costs are vastly outpacing household earnings, eroding domestic purchasing power. Over the past twelve months, natural gas prices have surged 56%, while real wages increased by only 2-3%.

Gospodarenco advised households to prepare for winter heating shocks by verifying meter readings and setting aside funds well before peak billing cycles. He also urged consumers to consider weatherization and apply for government-backed heating subsidies. The regulator's decision is expected to have a ripple effect on commercial energy inputs, leading to broader consumer inflation.
