Montney Natural Gas Formation Poised for Explosive Growth
The Montney natural gas formation in British Columbia and Alberta is a significant energy resource, with an area of 130,000 km², roughly two-thirds the size of the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico. The formation has the potential to produce 449 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, making it one of the biggest gas resources in North America. According to the Canada Energy Regulator (CER), natural-gas output is expected to grow by 47% by 2050, driven by liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports.
The Montney play is experiencing rapid expansion, with projections suggesting up to 32,000 new wells could be drilled by 2050. The federal government notes that companies will likely take many years to fully drill areas with the best reservoirs before moving on to lower-quality areas, which means well performance will continue rising as technology evolves.
The Montney natural gas is found in 'tight' geological rock formations, a mix of siltstone and sandstone, with some shale in the easternmost area. Producers have developed techniques such as hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to extract the gas from these formations. Despite opposition claims that fracking contaminates groundwater, the BC government states there has never been a confirmed case of groundwater contamination in BC due to hydraulic fracturing.
The Montney natural gas is used for both LNG exports and the production of propane and other natural-gas liquids (NGLs). The Asian demand for LNG is surging, driven by energy security and lower emissions. Japan and South Korea are major importers of Canadian LNG, while China's rapidly expanding propane dehydrogenation industry has also increased demand.
The development of the Montney play has been led by companies such as ARC Resources, Tourmaline, and Ovintiv, which have methodically developed the resource in anticipation of export demand. The growth of the BC natural gas production has more than doubled since 2010, with the Montney holding roughly 70% of the remaining gas resource in the play.
