Moscow Blocks Türkiye's Black Sea Peace Efforts

Türkiye's efforts to mediate peace between Russia and Ukraine have been met with resistance from Moscow, despite Ankara's intensified diplomatic push.

The conflict in the Black Sea continues to escalate, with civilian vessels caught in the crossfire. Ukrainian officials have expressed willingness to revive the Black Sea Grain Initiative, but signals from Moscow indicate a hardening negotiating position ahead of winter.

Türkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has stressed that Ankara's role as a mediator is crucial in ensuring safe navigation and trade routes in the region. He met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and President Vladimir Putin in June, where he emphasized the need for Russia to end its attacks on civilian ships.

Ukraine has also shown interest in reviving the Black Sea Grain Initiative, but warns that Russia may continue to make demands unrelated to grain exports. Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that Ukraine is ready for a ceasefire that would protect energy infrastructure alongside security in the Black Sea.
