Myanmar Surpasses One Million Tonnes of Maize Exported to Thailand

Myanmar has made significant strides in its maize exports to Thailand, shipping nearly one million tonnes of the crop during the duty-free period. The Ministry of Commerce reported that Myanmar exported approximately one million tonnes of maize to Thailand from February to August, taking advantage of a tariff exemption program.

The majority of these shipments moved through Yangon, Kawthoung-Ranong, and Myawady border trade channels. This is a crucial time for Myanmar's corn exports, as the country primarily relies on Thailand and the Philippines as its main markets.

Although the tariff exemption period has ended in Thailand, Myanmar will continue to export maize to the Philippines due to robust demand from local feed processing factories, which has driven up prices. The country cultivates around 1.38 million acres of maize annually, with production exceeding two million tonnes. Maize is predominantly grown in hill regions and cultivated as a monsoon crop between May 15th and the first week of June.
