The latest government report on natural gas inventories showed a smaller-than-expected increase but still well above historical averages. This led to a muted reaction in the prompt month natural gas futures market on Thursday. Analysts concluded that supply in the Lower 48 states should be adequate to meet winter demand.

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a 77 billion cubic feet (Bcf) injection into storage, widening the surplus to 1.4% above the five-year average. Despite this, demand remained seasonally soft, contributing to the lack of significant movement in futures prices.

The market's reaction suggests confidence that current supply levels will be sufficient to handle upcoming winter demand, even with the storage surplus expanding. This outlook is supported by analysts who see no immediate supply constraints.
