Navy Commends Conviction of Nine Crude Oil Thieves in Uyo Federal High Court
Nigerian Navy officials have praised the conviction and sentencing of nine individuals for crude oil theft by a Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The nine convicts were sentenced to five years' imprisonment on Count One and 10 years' imprisonment on Count Two, without the option of fine.
The Nigerian Navy disclosed that the convicts were arrested on February 7 during an intelligence-led operation under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, while allegedly stealing crude oil from an oil wellhead in Ibeno Local Government Area. The Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, stated that the conviction was a significant development in the fight against economic sabotage.
Folorunsho emphasized the importance of collaboration between security agencies, prosecutors, and the judiciary in ensuring that arrests for economic crimes lead to justice. He noted that the conviction underscored what can be achieved when operational action is matched by effective prosecution and judicial determination.
