Nebraska farmers are facing higher fuel costs as harvest season gets underway, with diesel prices reaching $6 a gallon and crude oil prices climbing to around $100 a barrel.
Despite these challenges, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen expressed optimism that the agricultural sector's connection to the energy industry will help offset some of the increased costs. He pointed out that corn and soybeans play a significant role in the nation's fuel supply, with ethanol and biodiesel serving as important components of the agricultural economy.
Pillen also discussed his administration's proposal to broaden the sales tax base to include services and everyday purchases not specifically related to agriculture. This move aims to reduce property taxes, which remain a major concern for Nebraska farmers.
