Nebraska Farmers Turn to Unconventional Solution Amid Drought

Due to drought conditions in much of Nebraska, pasture and hay are in short supply. The price of corn is currently below production costs, prompting producers to consider grazing standing corn with their cow herd as a feed option for the rest of the summer, fall, and winter.

Aaron Berger, a Nebraska Extension Educator, notes that this approach can be beneficial for both farmers and cattle. By allowing cows to graze on standing corn, they can reduce their reliance on expensive hay and pasture, while also providing a source of income for farmers who may not have other options.

However, it's essential to note that grazing standing corn requires careful management to avoid damaging the crop. Farmers must ensure that their cattle are properly supervised and that they don't consume too much of the corn, which can lead to reduced yields and lower quality feed.
