Nepal Seeks to Balance Cooking Gas Demand with Increased Indian Imports
Minister Gauri Kumari Yadav has assured lawmakers that her Ministry is working to address the imbalance in cooking gas supply and demand. She informed the House of Representatives meeting on August 7, 2026, that market monitoring had been intensified to prevent shortages of essential fuel.
The Minister advised consumers not to hoard gas cylinders, citing that once a scheme from half to full cylinders is implemented, it can cause a supply-demand imbalance. The combined storage capacity of the 58 LP gas industries operating currently stands at 10,166 metric tons.
Minister Yadav also mentioned that relevant agencies are following parliamentary committee directives and the Nepal Oil Corporation is taking technical measures to track LP gas cylinders. Diplomatic efforts are underway to secure an increased quota of gas cylinders from India for three months to manage increasing demand.
