Nevada Public Agencies Feel Pinch as Diesel Prices Soar
As diesel prices soar in Nevada, public agencies are feeling the pinch. The Clark County School District expects to pay an additional $2.9 million for diesel expenditures due to rising prices. Diesel has reached as high as $6.80 a gallon in the state, surpassing the national average of $6.41.
Economists warn that relief is unlikely soon, with no quick solution on the horizon. Richard Gearhart said even if military action overseas ends, fuel prices would not immediately drop back down to normal levels. He noted it can take up to six months for gas and diesel prices to return to their previous state.
The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada is bucking this trend by shifting its bus fleet from diesel to compressed natural gas. As a result, the RTC expects to spend less on fuel, with its budget decreasing from $17.2 million in 2026 to $11.5 million in 2027.
