Newfoundland's $400 Billion Gas Reserve Hurdle: Securing Investment
Canada's Newfoundland province sits atop an estimated $400 billion in untapped natural gas reserves, but attracting investment to tap into them has proven elusive. In recent years, offshore exploration licensing rounds have generated little interest, with dozens of parcels offered in both 2023 and 2024 failing to attract a single bid.
Fermeuse Energy Ltd., one company hoping to capitalize on the opportunity, has proposed a $12-billion project to transport gas through a 380-kilometre subsea pipeline to a floating LNG export facility for shipment to Europe. The project would require around 9.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, more than a third of the Jeanne d'Arc Basin's estimated recoverable resources.
The province's planned offshore natural gas royalty regime is seen as crucial in encouraging companies to commercialize gas, rather than re-injecting it into reservoirs to maintain pressure and maximize oil production. Fermeuse Energy's chief executive Swapan Kataria stated that existing operators have little incentive to commercialize associated natural gas while oil remains more profitable.
