NextEra Faces Liability for Price Gouging During Winter Storm Uri

An Oklahoma judge has ruled that NextEra Energy Marketing violated state law by charging excessive prices for natural gas during Winter Storm Uri in February 2021.

The storm caused widespread power outages and drove natural gas prices sharply higher, with the court finding NextEra liable under both the Oklahoma Emergency Price Stabilization Act and the Oklahoma Consumer Protection Act.

Attorney General Gentner Drummond announced the ruling, which grants partial summary judgment in favor of the state. The amount of damages, including alleged overcharges, restitution and disgorgement, will be determined at a future trial.
