Nifty 50 Jumps as Oil Prices Plummet on US-Iran Conflict De-escalation
The Indian stock market, represented by the Nifty 50 index, rose nearly 1% on Monday as oil prices plummeted following a US-Iran conflict de-escalation.
The benchmark index climbed to an intraday high of 23,973 after Brent crude fell 7% to around $90 per barrel. This sharp dip in crude prices reduced concerns over inflation and subsequent interest rate hikes by central banks.
Market analysts attribute the rally to a combination of factors, including declining oil prices, healthy Q1 earnings, and improved foreign portfolio investor flows.
VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments, observed that if the de-escalation of the West Asia conflict holds, it could sustain a mild rally in the market. He noted that falling oil prices are also supporting the Indian rupee, which rose to 96.18 per dollar.
Pankaj Pandey, head of research at ICICI Securities, expects the markets to perform well if a lasting resolution is achieved in the Middle East crisis. However, he emphasized that crude oil remains a significant challenge, as it puts pressure on the rupee and can stoke inflation concerns.
