Nigeria Eyes Record Wheat Imports Amid Growing Domestic Demand

Nigeria's wheat imports are expected to reach 7.2 million tons in the 2026/27 crop year, up 7% from the previous season, according to UkrAgroConsult citing USDA FAS.

This increase is attributed to a more stable foreign exchange market and improved access to foreign currency for importers, which will support continued growth in domestic demand.

Nigeria's wheat consumption is forecast at 6.8 million tons, up 6% from the previous year, driven by lower prices for wheat-based products and recovering consumer purchasing power.

The majority of wheat flour in Nigeria is used for bread production, while substantial volumes are also consumed by the pasta, noodles, and other flour-based food industries.
