Nigeria Labour Congress Demands Urgent Action on Petrol Price Hike

Nigeria's Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to take immediate action to mitigate the impact of the recent petrol price hike. NLC President Joe Ajaero warned that higher transport costs are pushing up school fees, rent, import taxes, and food prices, exacerbating poverty in the country.

Ajaero made this demand after the pump price of petrol rose to ₦1,430 per litre. He urged the government to provide immediate wage awards for workers, increase crude oil supply to local refineries in naira, and expand national storage capacity to prepare for energy emergencies.

The NLC president emphasized that these steps are necessary to create economic buffers that can protect Nigerians from rising energy costs while also addressing security challenges. He added that the government's efforts to lower pump prices were showing results before the recent price hike.
