Nigeria has secured a major refinancing deal for its state oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited. The government has approved a $4.5 billion refinancing of NNPC's flagship oil-backed financing facility, known as Project Gazelle.

The refinancing will unlock $3 billion in fresh funding and reduce the volume of crude committed to servicing the debt by about 11,250 barrels per day. This is expected to strengthen Nigeria's finances and improve government revenues through increased export volumes.

Unlike the original transaction, which required 90,000 barrels of crude per day to secure a loan, the refinanced facility will require only around 78,750 barrels per day. The additional export volumes are expected to boost government revenues while giving Nigeria greater flexibility in managing its oil receipts.
