Nigeria Seeks Shift from Crude Oil Exports to Domestic Refining
The Nigerian government has emphasized the need for domestic refining to reduce reliance on crude oil exports.
Nigeria has historically produced a significant amount of crude oil, but the country remains heavily dependent on imported petroleum products.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, stated that Nigeria must move away from an economy that primarily exports crude oil and instead capture more value through domestic refining, petrochemicals, and associated industrial activities.
Lokpobiri noted that the government is strengthening the Domestic Supply Obligation to ensure domestic refineries have reliable access to crude, which he described as 'an important instrument for advancing national energy security'.
