Nigeria Urged to Harness Gas Resources for Industrialization and Job Creation
Nigeria's natural gas resources offer a potential catalyst for industrialization and job creation, according to Lolade Olamide, a Principal Engineer at a major U.S. LNG facility.
Olamide presented a paper titled 'Avoiding the Crude Oil Trap: Using LNG Governance to Build Community and Industrial Opportunity in Lower Southern Nigeria' at the Nigerian Society of Engineers conference in Glasgow, Scotland.
The engineer emphasized that Nigeria's challenge lies not with resource scarcity, but rather weak governance and limited capacity to convert resource wealth into broad-based development.
Nigeria has over 200 trillion cubic feet of proven gas reserves, but LNG capacity remains at around 22 million tonnes annually, highlighting the need for strengthened governance, infrastructure, and industrial linkages around gas development.
