Nigeria's Crude Oil Output Falls Short of Refining Capacity

Nigeria's domestic refining sector is facing a looming crisis due to inadequate crude oil production. According to Adegbite Falade, Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Producers Group (IPPG), Nigeria's current crude output of 1.68 million barrels per day is insufficient to meet the increasing demand of local refineries.

In the medium term, domestic refineries are expected to require more than 1.5 million barrels of crude per day. Falade noted that this demand is close to Nigeria's entire liquid output and will leave a narrow margin for existing export commitments and government revenue requirements.

To address this challenge, Falade emphasized the need to incentivize exploration, accelerate development activities, and improve access to capital. He also highlighted the importance of protecting and modernizing evacuation infrastructure and reducing crude theft and pipeline sabotage.
