Nigeria's Gas Market Risk to Be Addressed by JEX Markets' Regulated Trading Exchange
JEX Markets has announced plans to establish a regulated trading exchange in Nigeria aimed at bridging the gap between the country's vast natural gas reserves and its underdeveloped domestic market.
The platform, which is licensed by both the Nigerian Midstream & Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), seeks to transition bilateral gas deals into a liquid, central marketplace, setting the stage for transparent price discovery and benchmarking across West Africa.
Blessing Ayemere, CEO of JEX Markets, emphasized that the platform will provide a bankable venue for gas producers, shoppers, and consumers to trade, clear, and settle transactions efficiently, reducing counterparty risk through central clearing and settlement.
Oscar Onyema, Chairman of JEX Markets, noted that despite Nigeria's substantial natural gas reserves, a fully functional gas market has yet to materialize due to the lack of transparent price discovery and standardization. He emphasized that a functioning market requires more than just molecules and pipelines but credible counterparties, effective clearing and settlement, reliable delivery arrangements, and market data that participants can trust.
JEX Markets aims to create an ecosystem where qualified buyers and sellers can transact transparently, efficiently, and with reduced counterparty risk. The platform will serve as a central marketplace for gas producers, marketers, aggregators, transportation infrastructure providers, clearing and settlement institutions, financial institutions, and industrial users.
