NNPC Claims N11.2 Trillion from Nigerian Government for Energy Security Costs
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) reported N11.2 trillion in receivables from the Federation in 2025, covering advances and costs incurred in protecting Nigeria's oil and gas assets.
These claims were about 57 percent higher than the N7.13 trillion energy security expense recorded in 2024. NNPC clarified that no new energy security expense was recognised in 2025 following a reconciliation of outstanding amounts against government royalties, taxes and dividends.
The company reported increased production and a 33 percent rise in profit after tax despite the substantial claims. Crude oil and condensate production averaged 1.77 million barrels per day in 2025, the highest level in five years, while natural gas production reached a three-year high of 7.2 billion standard cubic feet per day.
Bayo Ojulari, NNPC GCEO, said the company was also recording improvements in the fight against crude oil theft, particularly on major crude evacuation pipelines. He attributed the improved output to progress on strategic infrastructure projects and the use of technology such as fibre optics and intruder detection systems.
