No Pollution Detected in Odesa Waters Despite Golden Leo Attack

A recent attack by Russian forces on the vessel Golden Leo has raised concerns about pollution in Odesa waters. The ship, flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau and carrying corn, was attacked on July 19 while passing through a maritime corridor from the port of Chornomorsk.

According to regional authorities, no signs of oil product pollution have been detected in the marine area following the sinking of the vessel on July 26. Monitoring of water cleanliness continues, with relevant services and scientific institutions conducting constant checks.

Oleg Kiper, head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration, emphasized that the situation is under control, and all necessary resources are ready to be deployed in case of any changes.

The escalation in the region has significant implications for global grain exports. Ukraine is a major exporter of corn, wheat, rapeseed, sunflower seeds, and vegetable oil, with 90% of its raw commodities being carried out through the Black Sea ports of Odesa and the region.
