No Relief in Sight for Saskatchewan Motorists
Motorists in Saskatchewan are looking for relief at the pumps, but it seems unlikely that they will get it from their own government. The Alberta government has suspended its gas tax until 2027, providing a $0.13-a-litre savings to residents who cross the border.
Petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan with GasBuddy.com believes Saskatchewan is not likely to follow suit. 'It does come at great expense to suspend gasoline and diesel taxes,' he said.
The recent price drop in Swift Current, which fell to $1.779 on Thursday, may be due to wholesale fuel prices easing up. However, these prices have since shot back up sharply.
DeHaan attributes this brief waiver in fuel prices to an ExxonMobil refinery outside Chicago coming back online after being interrupted. The ongoing global conflicts continue to disrupt the petroleum market, and DeHaan warns that oil prices could rise again at any time.
