Norsk Hydro Updates on Alunorte Gas Supply Challenges
Norsk Hydro has provided an update on the natural gas supply situation at its Alunorte alumina refinery, highlighting ongoing challenges and financial impacts. In August 2026, the refinery's supplier, CELBA, informed Alunorte of disruptions in natural gas availability. As a result, Alunorte has not received contracted gas deliveries and is now sourcing gas at spot market prices. The company is also working on securing a long-term gas supply solution on competitive terms.
The financial and production impact for the third quarter of 2026 was initially estimated in mid-August, with lost alumina production projected between 100,000 to 120,000 tonnes and a financial hit of USD 75 to 100 million for Bauxite & Alumina. For the fourth quarter, the estimated cost impact due to the difference between contract prices and spot market gas prices is between USD 90-110 million.
Alunorte does not anticipate further gas supply interruptions and is managing the situation in collaboration with CELBA and relevant authorities. The financial impact remains uncertain, dependent on gas prices, contractual developments, and the implementation of a long-term solution. Additionally, Alunorte is pursuing legal remedies to protect its contractual rights and interests under the existing gas supply agreement.
