North American Oil Giants Unite: US-Canada Continental System Surpasses Expectations

The United States and Canada have developed a deeply integrated continental oil system, despite being competitors in the global market.

The two countries operate some of the world's largest oil industries, with the US producing approximately 13.7 million barrels per day in 2025 and forecast to average about 13.8 million barrels per day in 2026.

Canada produced an average of 5.5 million barrels per day in 2024, followed by additional growth in 2025, with the country's oil sands producing heavier crude.

The two countries' industries are complementary rather than competitive, with the US primarily producing light, sweet crude from shale formations and Canada dominating production with heavier crude from the oil sands.
