North Dakota Oil Output Surges to 1.15 Million BPD in June

North Dakota's oil production surged in June 2026, reaching 1,153,000 barrels per day (bpd), a significant increase of 28,000 bpd from May. According to the North Dakota Industrial Commission, this marks one of the country's top oil-producing states' best month-over-month gains.

The Bakken and Three Forks formations drove the majority of output, accounting for nearly 98% of total production at 1,126,000 bpd. These two formations have been the backbone of North Dakota's energy landscape since the shale boom of the late 2000s, with operators achieving efficiency gains through longer laterals and improved completion techniques.

The June figure is another data point on the state's long-term trajectory, which has fluctuated over the years. Despite temporary downturns, North Dakota remains one of the most significant oil-producing states in the U.S., with its monthly production data serving as a key reference point for tracking domestic supply trends.
