Norway Defies EU Moratorium on Arctic Oil and Gas

Despite the European Union's support for a moratorium on Arctic hydrocarbon supplies, Norway has decided to continue developing its oil and gas resources in the Barents Sea. Energy Minister Terje Aasland stated that this decision is based on the country's sovereign right to develop its own resources, even if the EU continues to oppose it.

Aasland emphasized that continued activity in the Barents Sea serves both Norwegian and European interests, especially given the current geopolitical situation. He noted that Norway aims to maintain petroleum production and exports at roughly current levels until at least 2035, with Barents Sea production being key to this goal.

Anders Opedal, CEO of Equinor, Norway's largest oil firm, added that oil and liquefied natural gas from the Barents Sea can be shipped anywhere in the world if rejected by the EU. He argued that this would only harm European security, not Norwegian interests.
