Nutrien indefinitely shuts Trinidad nitrogen operations due to gas supply issues
Nutrien Ltd. has announced the indefinite shutdown of its nitrogen operations in Trinidad at the Point Lisas Facility. The decision comes amid ongoing natural gas supply constraints and uncertainty, which have made it difficult to sustain operations. The company had previously initiated a controlled shutdown of the facility on October 23, 2025, due to port access restrictions and a lack of reliable and economic natural gas supply.
The indefinite closure follows the earlier controlled shutdown, reflecting the severity of the gas supply issues. Nutrien has clarified that there will be no impact on its nitrogen sales volume forecast, as it had already factored in the absence of production from the Trinidad operations.
The company reassures that it remains well-positioned to meet customer demand for nitrogen and plans to grow volumes from its North American operations. This strategic shift highlights Nutrien's adaptability in navigating supply chain challenges.
