Nutrien Shuts Down Trinidad Nitrogen Operations Indefinitely
Nutrien Ltd. (NTR) has announced an indefinite shutdown of its Trinidad Nitrogen operations at the Point Lisas Facility. The decision follows a strategic review and discussions with stakeholders, driven by ongoing natural gas constraints and supply uncertainties. The company aims to reduce financial pressure and improve its free cash flow and return on invested capital.
Nutrien had previously implemented a controlled shutdown of the facility on October 23, 2025, due to port access restrictions and a lack of reliable natural gas supply. After careful consideration, the company concluded that a permanent halt to operations was the best course of action.
The shutdown is not expected to impact Nutrien’s 2026 nitrogen sales volume guidance, as the company had already factored in no production from Trinidad. Nutrien remains confident in meeting customer demand through its North American operations, supported by reliability improvements and low-cost debottlenecking projects. The move aligns with the company’s strategy to optimize its portfolio and enhance long-term financial flexibility.
During its second-quarter call, Nutrien raised its 2026 potash sales volume guidance to 14.2-14.8 million tons from 14.1-14.8 million tons, citing strong demand in key offshore markets. Global potash shipments are projected at 74-77 million tons for 2026. Nitrogen sales volume guidance was maintained at 9.2-9.7 million tons, while phosphate sales volume guidance remains 2.4-2.6 million tons.
