Nutrien to Indefinitely Shut Down Trinidad Nitrogen Operations
Nutrien Ltd. (TSX and NYSE: NTR) has announced plans to indefinitely shut down its Trinidad Nitrogen operations at the Point Lisas Facility. The decision comes after a thorough review of strategic alternatives and discussions with stakeholders, driven by ongoing natural gas constraints and uncertainty. The company believes this move will enhance free cash flow and improve return on invested capital.
The shutdown follows a controlled halt of the facility on October 23, 2025, which was initially triggered by port access restrictions and an unreliable supply of natural gas. These issues had significantly reduced the facility's contribution to Nutrien's free cash flow over an extended period. Dean Perkins, Senior Vice President of Upstream, Nitrogen, and Proprietary Product Operations, expressed gratitude for the Trinidad team's contributions and assured responsible and safe management of the transition.
Despite the shutdown, Nutrien confirmed that its 2026 Nitrogen sales volume guidance remains unchanged, as the company had already factored out production from the Trinidad operations. The firm remains well-positioned to meet customer demand for nitrogen, with plans to grow volumes from its North American assets through reliability improvements and low-cost debottleneck projects.
