Nutrien to indefinitely shut Trinidad nitrogen operations
Nutrien Ltd. (NTR-T), the world’s largest potash producer, announced on Monday it will indefinitely shut down its nitrogen operations in Trinidad at the Point Lisas facility. The decision follows a strategic review and stems from ongoing natural gas supply constraints and uncertainty in the country. The move comes nearly a year after Nutrien began a controlled shutdown of the facility on October 23, 2025, citing port access restrictions and a lack of reliable and economic natural gas supply.
The company stated that these challenges had significantly reduced the free cash flow contribution from its Trinidad operations over time, making the indefinite shutdown the best course of action. Nutrien expects the shutdown to improve its free cash flow and return on invested capital. Despite the closure, the company assured that its 2026 nitrogen sales outlook will not be affected, as its North American operations will meet customer demand.
Nutrien’s Trinidad operations previously produced about 85,000 metric tons of ammonia and 55,000 metric tons of urea per month. The indefinite shutdown highlights the company’s focus on optimizing its operations amid external constraints.
