Nvidia, Bond Market Weigh on US Stocks as Investors Eye Busy Week
US stocks were relatively flat on Monday as investors looked ahead to a busy week of market-moving events. The S&P 500 dipped 0.3% and retreated from its all-time high set earlier this month, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 59 points or 0.1%. Meanwhile, tech stocks led the decline, with Nvidia down 2.3% as it prepares to release its quarterly earnings report on Wednesday.
The bond market also played a key role in shaping investor sentiment, with longer-term Treasury yields ticking lower after the US Treasury Department announced plans to increase buybacks of Treasurys last week. However, analysts warn that this move may only have a limited impact due to the small size of the buybacks and the underlying issues driving up yields.
The drop in oil prices also contributed to easing bond market pressures, with Brent crude falling 2.3% to $90.55 per barrel. Despite these developments, analysts caution that the US government's efforts to influence the bond market could ultimately lead to higher pressure on inflation and a rate hike by the Federal Reserve.
