NY Fuel Costs Soar Amid Ongoing Global Oil Market Disruption
The six-month conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran has had far-reaching consequences on global oil markets, particularly in New York. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is crucial for oil shipping, with around 20% of global petroleum-liquids consumption passing through it in 2024.
According to Greg Nowell, an associate professor of political science at the University at Albany, the disruption has had a major impact on global oil prices and supplies. 'There are a few alternate routes which have kept the oil flowing, but it has had a major impact nonetheless on global oil prices and global supplies,' he said.
New York drivers and homeowners preparing for the heating season are feeling the effects of the disruption. The statewide average regular-gas price was $4.19 per gallon last Friday, with diesel prices averaging around $5.73 per gallon.
