A Japanese company's plan to bring liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Oahu has sparked debate among community members and industry professionals. JERA Americas, a subsidiary of JERA, is proposing an LNG storage and regasification terminal in state waters off Kalaeloa as part of its larger plan for the new utility 'GenCo.'

The $2 billion power plant would provide LNG to Oahu through GenCo, but some critics argue that it's not worth the risk. Ben Sullivan with Local Power Hawaii, a coalition advocating for locally sourced renewable energy, said the public needs clear data on potential savings and risks associated with the plan.

Supporters of the plan, including Waianae homelessness volunteer James Pakele, see it as an opportunity to address utility costs that can be a barrier to housing for those on fixed incomes. However, others have concerns about job security, fuel security for airports and military, and the long-term plan for the plant.

JERA Americas Vice President of Development Erik Montague stated that the company is committed to transparency and community engagement, with more meetings planned in the coming months.
