American oil and gas giants are reaping massive profits due to the ongoing US-Iran conflict, which has halted most shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and led to a surge in oil prices. The conflict, now in its sixth month, has disrupted petroleum shipments, causing consumers around the world to pay more for fuel and face shortages. As a result, oil companies such as Exxon Mobil and Chevron have seen their profits soar.

Exxon Mobil reported that its second-quarter profits doubled to $14.53 billion, while Chevron nearly quadrupled its profits to $12.07 billion. The two oil giants brought in $116.02 billion in revenue, up 42% from the previous year. Six of Europe's largest oil companies posted combined first-quarter profits of $22 billion, more than 40% higher than last year.

Patrick Galey, fossil fuels lead at Global Witness, noted that 'there are constituencies around the world who are having a very good crisis, and the oil producers are one of them.' However, lawmakers propose taxing major oil producers for war windfalls, with Democrats in Congress introducing bills to tax companies such as Exxon and Chevron.

Refineries owned by these companies are also benefiting from higher prices, as they turn oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and home heating oil. The global refining market is under-supplied, and companies like Exxon and Chevron have taken advantage of the situation to make high profits. However, not all oil and gas companies benefit equally, with some companies in the Middle East struggling to get their liquefied natural gas out of the Persian Gulf or dealing with damaged oil fields.
