Oil Industry Windfall Sparks Political Backlash Over Gas Prices
The oil industry is experiencing record profits due to the U.S.-Iran war, which has led to an unprecedented supply shock and higher crude prices. U.S. oil giants such as ExxonMobil and Chevron have reported massive increases in earnings, with Shell's profits tripling to $10.8 billion and TotalEnergies' profits doubling to $5.4 billion.
However, the industry's windfall is generating political blowback, particularly from President Donald Trump, who has lashed out at gasoline prices. Trump has directed the Department of Justice to investigate any 'gouging' by the industry and has accused oil companies of not doing enough to boost supply.
Despite increased drilling in U.S. sites such as the Permian Basin, analysts say that there is little the oil industry can do to immediately bring down gas prices. Kenneth Medlock III, a fellow at the Baker Institute, stated that 'the quickest way to bring gas prices down is for the Iran crisis to disappear.'
