Oil Market Shifts Towards Shortage Amid Supply Disruptions
The global oil market is shifting towards a shortage, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The agency projects that the supply deficit will widen to 1.3 million barrels per day by 2026.
High oil prices are curbing consumption through demand-disruption mechanisms, but disruptions to shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and slow production recovery in the Middle East are exerting greater pressure on the supply side.
The IEA has also sharply lowered its global oil demand forecast, projecting a decline of 1.56 million barrels per day by 2026, down from its previous estimate.
This contraction on the demand side is linked to rising energy prices and disruptions to transportation, with consumers and businesses cutting fuel consumption and scaling back industrial activity.
