Oil Markets Price in Prolonged Hormuz Crisis

The prolonged Hormuz crisis has become a new reality for oil markets, with traders pricing in disruptions to Middle East energy supplies as a long-term risk rather than a temporary shock.

Nearly six months after war broke out between the US and Iran, hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough have faded. The interim ceasefire agreement expired on July 17, and neither side is willing to compromise over the future of the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian officials warn that they will escalate tensions unless Washington fully implements the deal within weeks.

The stalemate has led traders to anticipate restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which could persist for months. This shift in expectations helps explain why crude oil prices have stabilized around $90 a barrel, roughly 50% higher than at the start of the year.
