Oil pollution incidents are escalating in the Middle East as tensions between Iran, the US, and Israel continue to rise. Two oil slicks were detected near Qeshm Island in Iranian waters, with one slick estimated to extend for approximately 160 kilometers. The source of the pollution is unclear, but it has been linked to a suspected Iranian attack on the Liberia-flagged dry bulk carrier Minoan Pioneer.

According to satellite imagery captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 program, a large area of apparent oil contamination was visible in the surrounding waters near Qeshm Island. Video footage verified by Reuters showed dark, bubbling material reaching the shoreline on August 11.

A separate and significantly larger oil spill is unfolding off Oman's southern coast. The Caroline Bezengi, a Suezmax tanker carrying Russian crude, has been leaking oil since running aground near the Hallaniyat Islands in June. The vessel was reportedly involved in an explosion off Yemen on June 8 before its crew was evacuated.

The environmental impact of these incidents is becoming increasingly concerning, with marine experts warning that conflict conditions can make oil-spill response operations considerably more difficult.
