Oil Price Rise Weighs on Global Markets Amid Strong Earnings
Global markets saw a mixed performance on Tuesday as investors weighed the impact of rising oil prices against strong corporate earnings. The CAC 40 in France and DAX in Germany both slipped by 0.5%, while Britain's FTSE 100 was essentially flat. In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 took the biggest hit, falling 2.5% to 67,460.73.
The S&P/ASX 200 in Australia was little changed, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng and Shanghai Composite both rose slightly. Analysts pointed out that robust earnings reports have helped offset worries about inflation caused by rising oil prices. In particular, the growth of artificial intelligence has driven demand across various industries.
The price of Brent crude, the international standard, rose 0.1% to $90.94 a barrel early Tuesday, while U.S. crude gained 0.6% to $84.99 a barrel. Oil prices have been climbing due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East and concerns about global oil supply.
The U.S. dollar also strengthened against the Japanese yen, rising to 159.68 from 159.46 yen.
