Oil Price Slump Calms Markets as Sanctions Bite Iran
Oil prices have declined to 3% in response to new sanctions against Iran, which is helping to calm stock and bond markets. The S&P 500 rose by 0.4%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 170 points. Brent crude fell $2.35 to $88.19 per barrel.
The decline in oil prices comes despite tensions between the US and Iran, which have been escalating since the Trump administration announced new sanctions. The sanctions are intended to further hurt Iran's economy, but they have also contributed to a drop in the value of the Iranian rial against the US dollar.
Despite this uncertainty, the stock market has remained relatively stable, with futures for the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average each rising by 0.4% on Tuesday. The Nasdaq composite climbed 0.7%, while technology stocks such as Nvidia continued to perform well in premarket trading.
However, not all markets are unaffected by the decline in oil prices. The value of Bitcoin has risen modestly, holding around $79,364 - a 24% increase from just one week ago.
