Oil Prices Slide to $88 Amid Sanctions Doubts and De-Escalation Signals

Brent oil prices fell to $88 on Tuesday, their lowest since August 13, as concerns over the effectiveness of US sanctions against Iran and a reported plan to return evacuated diplomats to the Middle East led investors to reassess geopolitical risk.

The decline follows Monday's rollout of 'Operation Economic Outcast', which was framed by Washington in unusually aggressive terms but ultimately fell short of targeting major Chinese banks, imposing a firm compliance deadline, or spelling out broader measures against countries sustaining Iranian trade.

China buys around 90% of Iran's oil exports, making enforcement against Chinese entities crucial to the sanctions' success. Beijing's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian rejected the package as 'illicit unilateral sanctions', vowing to defend its interests.
