Oil Price Surge Sends US Stocks Lower Amid Iran Conflict Uncertainty
Oil prices have rebounded, causing US stocks to fall as investors grow anxious about rising costs. The S&P 500 dropped by 0.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 329 points or 0.6%. This comes after President Donald Trump rejected an offer from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume talks on its nuclear program.
The price of Brent crude oil rose by 1.5% to $98.87 per barrel, which has been volatile due to uncertainty surrounding the conflict with Iran. The war has disrupted tanker traffic through the strait, impacting global oil deliveries. Despite this volatility, prices have remained higher than pre-conflict levels.
The increase in oil prices is exacerbating inflation concerns, as the average price of regular gasoline has risen to nearly $4.48 per gallon from $3.13 a year ago. This has contributed to higher Treasury yields, making borrowing more expensive and putting downward pressure on stock prices.
