Oil Price Surge Weighs on Global Markets Ahead of Trump-Xi Talks
Global shares are mixed in early trading on Thursday, with investors digesting recent swings in oil prices and US bond market movements. The French CAC 40 index declined by nearly 0.8% to 8,061.10, while Germany's DAX fell 0.9% to 25,183.19. Britain's FTSE 100 inched down 0.1% to 10,693.15.
US shares are also set to drift lower, with Dow futures down 0.4% to 51,669.00 and S&P 500 futures dropped 0.6% to 7,725.75. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 gained 0.8%, boosted by interest in artificial intelligence.
The price of Brent crude oil, the international standard, rose 2.77% to $106.94 a barrel, with investors wary of disruptions in Middle East oil supplies due to the ongoing war with Iran.
Market attention is also focused on upcoming talks between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House, where trade, the war in Iran, and AI are expected to be discussed.
